Pernese

Physiology

These "dragons" are of the same stature as the Western dragons; consisting of four legs and 2 wings. They do however have smooth, leathery skin compared to the common scaley hide usually found on the common dragon. The eyes of this dragon are compound and faceted like a fly's, they can change color depending on the mood of the dragon. They possess the telepathic ability to share thoughts with other dragons and their rider; sometimes, in special cases, they communicate with other people, whether they be a rider of another dragon or just a typical human being. Pernese dragons also have the ability to teleport "between", a place void of space and time, to escape danger. They can breath fire like any other dragon with one exception, they must first chew and swallow a certain type of flammable mineral called "Firestone".

History

The colonists of Pern (A world created by the mind of the author Anne McAffrey) genetically engineered the cell structure of Firelizards to make the larger version, which is the Pernese Dragon. Pernese dragons and their riders have a life-long relationship with their riders, this bond is started at what is known as "Impression". This is when the dragons hatch and choose their human partner; thus the term "impression" originates from the impression the human counterpart leaves on the dragon, making the dragon want to choose this being for his/her partner. If the human dies, the dragon teleports to "between" and dies there. If the dragon dies, the human rider usually wastes away and dies.
