Scales

The scales, horns, and claws of a dragon are densley packed cells made of keratin, a tough fibrous protein. They are as soft as tissue paper when the animal is first born. These parts of a dragon's anatomy slowly harden as the dragon ages. The scales are formed from the iron in the dragon's blood or vegetable matter. As the dragon eats, the matter is absorbed by the dragon's blood stream asnd mixed with keratin to create steel-hard scales. The process of hardening scales takes about one year after being hatched.
